Novelty reigns at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (CBR-G). Best described as a campus rather than a complex, a park rather than a facility, the non-traditional look and feel is what fans notice first, a sun-bathed, 141-acre baseball paradise. The results are eye-popping, an aesthetic home run and a one-of-a-kind spring-training environment. Below is a list of the 15 most compelling novelties at CBR-G.
1. Water Feature
A 1,300-foot, two-acre lake system with river serves the dual purpose of irrigation for fields and site landscaping, and aesthetic enhancement of the campus by physically creating a natural barrier between the two teams’ practice facilities while offering interconnecting walking trails and a park-like feel. The lake utilizes reclaimed water and is stocked with fish.
2. Architecture
Mixture of architectural touches: Natural stone veneers, tri-color faux staining, rusty metal panels, Gabion wall systems, earth-tone (caramel) stadium seat color, and other appointments that blend with the natural desert colors of Arizona. Construction utilizes sweeps and angles instead of a big-box look.
3. Placement
Recessed stadium and team support buildings and secluded parking in the back (north) of the property create open space at the front (south) of the property off Camelback Road.
4. Landscaping
Approximately 5,000 plants and trees have been planted, including Afghan pine trees that frame the batter’s background in center field.
5. Sight Lines
Stadium playing field is sunk 12 feet below grade. Stadium seating is elevated 12 feet above grade to provide unobstructed sightlines.
6. Walking Paths
Fans take natural walking paths of decomposed granite from parking lots along the water feature and between practice diamonds en route to the main entrance in center field.
7. Team Buildings
Asymmetrical team support buildings. The Dodgers separate their major and minor leaguers in two buildings; one building combines White Sox major and minor leaguers.
8. Replica Home Fields
Two of the 12 practice fields (four major league, eight minor league) are replica fields of the Dodgers and White Sox home ball parks with exact dimensions of Dodger Stadium and U.S. Cellular Field, respectively. Three additional infields also have been built.
9. Orange Grove
A touch of Dodgertown, southern California, and Arizona, the new orange grove is located on the east side of the property beyond the left-field wall of replica Dodger Stadium.
10. Tunnels
Players access the stadium via tunnels from their clubhouses. Also, the White Sox access some of their practice fields from a third tunnel behind their clubhouse building.
11. Capacity
Second-largest seating capacity in the Cactus League: 10,000 seats, 3,000 berm (grass) seats.
12. Bandstand
Music is offered on game days outside the plaza on a permanent waterside bandstand.
13. Walk of Fame
The Walk of Fame runs along the water feature.
14. Autograph Corners
The player entry points to the stadium field from tunnels near both foul poles are ideal perches for young autograph seekers who arrive early.
15. UPDATES!
Fans attending workouts and games at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (CR-G) this spring
will notice some exciting updates in the stadium.
• Montejo Patio — The new 5,500-square-foot Montejo Patio that includes 3,500 square feet of
shade is a 360-degree bar on the first-base side near the right-field corner that also will offer new
food concepts. It is CR-G’s first construction project in its seven-year history.
• Retired Numbers — Retired Dodger and White Sox jersey numbers will be displayed on the back
walls of both bullpens. Each team has 10 retired numbers.
